Is December 21, 2012 Doomsday?

The thought of “doomsday” alone stirred my interest. Even with a few deadlines looming over my head, I did a little research and here’s what I’ve come up, so far.

2012-doomsday-2008Scholars say the Mayan Calendar doesn’t end in 2012. According to an article I’ve read, the Mayan Calendar is based on “cycles within cycles within cycles.” So probably 2012 is an ending of a cycle. True enough, for the Mayans, 2012 is the end of the Great Cycle. What is this Great Cycle, anyway? The Great Cycle is a Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, which started 5,125 years ago and is expected to end on December 21, 2012.

Esoteric writers and mystics came up with theories on how the world will end in 2012. Many believe that the ending of the Great Cycle will be a beginning of a New Age. Some linked it to beliefs about crop circles and alien abductions and odd things like that. In the 1980s, John Jenkins noted the correspondence of the date December 21 with winter solstice in 2012 – the Galactic Alignment.

Scientists also presented the idea which involves a geomagnetic reversal (polar shift). A polar shift may be triggered by a massive solar flare with energy equal to 100 million atomic bombs (fine!). This theory is supported by an evidence of the weakening of the Earth’s magnetic field. This indicates a reversal of the north and south poles. Scientists believe that the Earth is “long overdue” and that the last reversal was 780,000 years ago. NASA also expects a “particularly strong solar maximum” sometime between 2010 and 2012.

Another theory of the apocalypse is Earth’s collision with some large planetary object, referred to as Nibiru or Planet X. This idea came from ZetaTalk’s founder Nancy Lieder, who claims she was contacted by gray extraterrestrials called Zetas. She also claimed that Zetas implanted a communication device in her brain to channel messages from them. In 2003, she claimed that a pole shift will cause the end of the world, which was later on revised to 2010.

In his book, Lawrence Joseph predicts widespread catastrophe in Apocalypse 2012: A Scientific Investigation Into Civilization’s End. On the other hand, Andrew Smith, a spiritual healer, predicts a restoration of a “true balance between Divine Feminine and Masculine” in The Revolution of 2012: Vol. 1, The Preparation. Moreover, Daniel Pinchbeck forecasts a “change in the nature of consciousness,” assisted by indigenous insights and psychedelic drug use.

Day AfterIf it is indeed TRUE, do you think these may be the possible threats (?):

Space

  • Meteorite/Comet Impact
  • Near Massive Object
  • Gamma Ray Burst
  • Extraterrestrials

Earth Changes

  • Ice Age
  • Global Pandemic
  • Mega tsunami/Global Flood
  • Pole shift
  • Super volcano

Humanity

  • Nuclear War
  • New Technology
  • Economic Collapse

When I was in grade school, I was talking to our school guard waiting for my dad to pick me up, when she handed me a local newspaper. I read the caption which says “End of the World  October 1992″. I thought like, “Oh no, it’s September 1992. I’ve got a month to live?” It seemed like the paper sweet-talked me into believing the news. I suddenly felt the urge to pray. And since the church was just beside our school, I was prompted to go in, to ask for  an “extension”. When I stepped out of the church, I looked up the sky and it seemed dark and sad. Or something like that. I started to walk home because everybody was gone and our school guard was already leaving the premises. Then I thought, “Dad is probably caught up in some meeting or so.” (Don’t you just wish there was text messaging that time?LOL) So, I did walk home. I felt like it was the longest walk I ever took. When I got home I was already sobbing. Of course, my mom asked what happened and I told her about the news I read and she said that anything can happen so all we have to do is pray.

Ending or not, life goes on for now. We must prepare ourselves whether the end of the world is on 2012, today or tomorrow or the next month or on 3012 (well, 3012 seems beyond our life span already). The end of the world may also mean the termination of your life, the lost of  spouse or a loved one. So, in a nutshell, it could mean anything.

2012, eh? Well that remains to be seen :) So, what do you think? Will the world end on December 21, 2012 or is it just some crazy theory or perhaps another scary bedtime story?

I reckon it could be a good scary bedtime story :D

2012 Doomsday is also a movie released in 2008.

The final day on the Mayan calendar finds four faithful strangers convening at an ancient temple in the heart of Mexico in this apocalyptic thriller starring Cliff De Young and Dale Midkiff. Centuries ago, the Mayans set a date for the end of time: December 21, 2012. Now that date is upon us, and NASA scientists have noted that a catastrophic polar shift is about to occur. Could it be that an ancient Mexican temple holds the key to unlocking the secret that could protect humankind from total extinction? [D-Man2010]

oh come on! i still got to celebrate my birthday. LOL Some crazy punk ass said that Sept 9, 1999 was the world’s end, then Jan. 1, 2000, then, Feb. 2, 2002 and so on…
it is absurd to believe in stuff like that! it’s the end of the world if i am a Mayan or if i follow the beliefs of the Mayans… guess what? i am not a Mayan *evil laugh*… and i don’t believe in it! Hah! only God knows when He will end the world! Duh! Peace.

End of the world could mean something like the Carpenters’ song :D “Don’t they know it’s the end of the world, `cause you don’t love me anymore?……etc etc…..It ended when you said goodbye….” Hehe.

Now that is really scary if it were true because 2012 is so close in coming…Still, like you mentioned, there were so many “It’s almost the end of the world” stuff in the past years that it is difficult to say if any of these “scientific” and “historical” stuff actually have any real basis at all :D

  6. I have seen a few documentaries from the History channel. They are really good and very entertaining at times!

  7. Pebbles says:
